Recruitment

We accept students from the Genetics and Genomics and Microbiology Ph.D. programs at NC State. Once you have successfully applied to one of these programs, please feel free to reach out to us!

Lab Expectations for Prospective Members

Scientific Expectations: Our lab seeks molecular microbiologists with distinct yet complementary skill sets, prioritizing students with industry experience in microbiology and biotechnology. We expect a strong foundation in molecular biology, with an emphasis on CRISPR-based techniques, bacterial genetics, and omics approaches (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics). Expertise in microbiology is critical, including hands-on experience with lactic acid bacteria (LAB), microbial culturing, and fermentation techniques. All members must be versatile in the CRISPR-bacteria-phage trifecta, engaging with the dynamic interplay of these systems. Importantly, our work extends beyond genome editing or purely computational (in silico) research. We integrate experimental and computational approaches to address complex questions in microbial immunity and ecology, requiring adaptability and a broad scientific curiosity.

Team and Interpersonal Expectations: We value talent, ambition, and independence, but alignment with our lab’s goals and culture is paramount. We seek collaborative team players from around the world who thrive in a cooperative environment, actively engaging with colleagues across projects. Prospective members should be eager to learn, open to developing new skills, and committed to fostering a supportive lab community. Compatibility with all lab members—through effective communication and mutual respect—is essential for maintaining our collaborative and inclusive culture.

Operational Expectations: Our lab operates differently from a traditional academic research group. Prospective members should be prepared for a dynamic environment with unique aspects, including:

  • Funding and Timelines: Our projects often follow non-standard funding models and accelerated timelines.
  • Project Portfolio: We manage a diverse range of projects that require flexibility and adaptability.
  • Collaborations: We engage in extensive internal and external collaborations, necessitating strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Management Style: Our leadership approach is tailored to support individual and team growth.
  • Professional Development: We prioritize ongoing learning and career development, encouraging members to take initiative in their growth.

Prospective members should be enthusiastic about joining a lab that blends rigorous science with a unique operational framework, embracing both the challenges and opportunities this environment presents.
